OUR CURRICULUM

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Our curriculum has been developed to reflect the priorities outlined in our research base and is underpinned by the Core Content Framework (CCF). Our curriculum offer goes beyond the CCF and includes content we feel vital in developing effective teachers, for example our Wellbeing and Professional Attributes strands are extensive and interwoven throughout.  Each of the curriculum strands is introduced in the Autumn term and initially during the orientation period, there is a focus on supporting trainees to adjust their perspective on the classroom to that of a teacher. Within the Teaching & Learning(T&L) strand, the emphasis is on introducing trainees to the ‘science of learning’, so that their approach to classroom practice can be built upon a secure understanding of cognition and learning. Once this foundation is in place, the curriculum content moves on to consider pedagogy more specifically through a focus on ‘planning and preparation’. As you become immersed in the life of your Main and Alternative Placement schools, you will begin to adapt to the responsibilities associated with leading learning and planning. Centre- based training and on-placement experiences are sequenced to ensure that you develop as practitioners through an increasingly challenging diet of theory and on-placement practice. Beginning with foundational principles and gradually moving towards more advanced concepts and skills, you will be provided with multiple opportunities to learn, remember, and apply what you have been taught within a supportive professional learning environment.  What will your experience be like as a secondary trainee?
Asa secondary trainee at Sacred Heart Newcastle SCITT, you will be immersed in daily school life right from Day 1 and will become part of a school community across the whole school year.
During your teacher training year, you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience, combining centre-based training with hands on practical application of skills within a classroom setting; equipping you with the transferable skills required to become a qualified secondary practitioner.

While on placement, you will gain teaching experience across the two key stages you are training in: KS3 and 4 or KS4 and 5, spending time in your main school and in an alternative placement school. Throughout both of these experiences, you will be supported by a Subject Mentor based in school, while also having the guidance of the Lead Mentors in the central team. As a qualified secondary teacher, you will be expected to develop your subject specific expertise under the guidance of subject experts from across our Partnership of secondary schools.  You will also develop the skills, knowledge and experience to offer pastoral guidance and support with the social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and moral development of the young people you work with.  Sacred Heart Newcastle SCITT fully prepares you for the privilege and responsibility of teaching the next generation, igniting and instilling a love of learning within them. What will your experience be like as a primary trainee? As a primary trainee at Sacred Heart Newcastle SCITT you will be emersed in daily school life across the whole school year and become a valued member of a school community.
